Veterinary Technician
JOB SUMMARY
This position performs technical duties preparation and instruction of veterinary labs and in the provision of veterinary care to university animals.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Prepares laboratory exercises and instructs students.
- Assists students with remedial and make-up assignments.
- Tracks and documents student laboratory grades.
- Procures department supplies.
- Monitors animal safety and welfare to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Administers medications to animals.
- Diagnoses animal illness and injuries.
- Trains new student workers in the care of animals; schedules student workers.
- Assists in the recruitment of students.
- Completes continuing education.
- Assists with a variety of educational camps.
- Manages biohazards, expired drug, and safety programs.
- Assists with research projects.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of animal husbandry principles.
- Knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of animals.
- Knowledge of veterinary laboratory principles, practices, and safety guidelines.
- Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
- Knowledge of laboratory instruction and grading principles.
- Skill in decision making and problem solving.
- Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Academic Department Chair assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include American Veterinary Association guidelines, the Animal Welfare Act, animal welfare regulations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines, the Student Worker Handbook, the employee handbook, USDA guidelines, FDA drug disposal regulations, the Georgia Reportable Disease Act, and college and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related technical duties. Changing priorities and the need to respond to unforeseen circumstances contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the care of university animals. Success in this position contributes to the education of student and to the proper care of animals.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, vendors, veterinarians, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to motivate or influence persons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The employee must physically restrain large animals.
- The work is typically performed in an office or veterinary laboratory. The employee is exposed to infectious diseases and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position supervises assigned student workers and has functional supervision over Animal Caretaker (1).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field required.
- More than two years of related experience required.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
