Upward Bound High School Science Instructor
Job Summary
Instructors of the Upward Bound Program at Fort Valley State University provide face-to-face and online academic support services to the students of the Upward Bound Project in an area of expertise (Math, English, and Science). All instructors are hired in a part-time, temporary status with the possibility of continuing to teach during the Academic Year and future Summer Program components.
Three instructors will be hired to teach Science Instructor hired for the 2022 -2023 Academic Year Summer will be required to work on Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (two Saturdays a month) from October 2022-May 2023.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teaches at an appropriate instructional level face-to-face and online classes.
- Conducts assigned classes and provides other academic support services (e.g., workshops, and development session with emphasis on academic)
- Assists Academic Advisor with the initial and on-going assessments of students' academic abilities and rates of achievements
- Prepares appropriate course outlines and syllabuses for assigned courses
- Provides teacher-focused and student-focused content development.
- Provides initial focus, content emphasis and linking, and lesson summaries.
- Assesses and encourages student progress.
- Monitors student progress.
- Responds to adequate and inadequate student performances.
- Supports students.
- Handles non-instructional tasks efficiently and uses instructional time appropriately.
- Maintains effective physical setting for instruction.
- Maintains appropriate student behavior in the classroom.
- Interacts in a professional manner with staff, students, and parents.
- Enforces regulations concerning student conduct and discipline.
- Models correct use of language, oral and written.
- Demonstrates accurate and up-to-date knowledge of content.
- Maintains lesson plans as required by policy.
- Experience teaching educationally first-generation and economically challenged students
- Maintains professional relationships.
- Maintains confidentiality of students and student records.
- Transports students to and from designated pick-up and drop-off locations (as needed)
- Other job-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Appropriate secondary and specific credential required (Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred)
- Must be Highly Qualified: Science (9-12) Clear Renewable Certificate • Effective written and oral communication skills
- Exceptional interpersonal communication and organizational skills
- Certification and experience working with high school students in an academic setting • Experience teaching educationally and economically challenged students in an educational setting • Familiarity with standardized tests • Excellent written and verbal skills • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills • Ability to establish positive rapport with students • Ability to motivate students socially and educationally
Working conditions
- Evening/night/weekend work
- Work on weekends
Physical requirements
The work requires minor physical exertion such as short periods of standing, walking long distances, some recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Job may require recurring lifting of lightweight objects with infrequent bending or stooping alternating with the lighter activities.
