JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing law enforcement response and assistance. The sergeant provides duty instruction and supervises police activity at an operational level, which includes implementing orders, investigations, maintaining discipline and ensuring the punctuality of officers. This position requires a motivated individual who thrives to serve, protect and seeks to serve the campus with customer service and community oriented policing
MAJOR DUTIES
- Prevents and discovers the commission of crimes.
- Enforces traffic laws.
- Answers calls and complaints involving fire, traffic control, accidents, robberies, and other crimes.
- Investigates crimes against persons and property; collects evidence and secures crime scenes.
- Arrests person(s) suspected of crimes.
- Prepares various records and reports; testifies in court and performs other related work as required.
- Supervises police and security officers.
- Patrols the campus grounds; checks doors, windows, gates, and parking lots to ensure security.
- Renders aid to motorists such as jump-starts and calling a wrecker or locksmith if needed.
- Assists person(s) stuck on elevators; gives escorts when requested.
- Responds to maintenance emergencies.
- Works sport activities and any other activities requiring a police officer.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of standard police practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of CAD reporting system.
- Knowledge of University properties and traffic control problems.
- Skill in analyzing situations and determining proper action.
- Skilled in approving reports.
- Skill in effective written and oral communication.
- Skill in dealing with all types of people in a professional manner.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Police Lieutenant assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include FVSU departmental policies and procedures manual, FVSU Employee handbook, and USG policies. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of varied law enforcement duties.
- The purpose of this position is to preserve law and order and protect students, staff, and visitors. Success in this position helps ensure the safety of the University.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with students, faculty, co-workers, and visitors.
- Contacts are typically to provide services and to give or exchange information.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while standing or walking. The employee distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes a sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over Corporal (1), Communications Officer (1), and Security Officer (4). As mid-level command officers, sergeants are responsible for leading and motivation the patrol officers who work under them.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Three years of patrol supervisory related experience.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Police Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
