Research Communications Specialist
Job Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Extension Administrator for Agricultural Communications, Conferencing and Technology, this is a professional, full-time staff position primarily responsible for providing communicating the impacts of research conducted by the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology to federal and state partners and stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Edit and write articles and press releases aimed at documenting Agricultural Research news
- Coordinate with staff and faculty to meet deadlines
- Execute production of publications
- Assist with organizing special events
- Maintain relationships with local, regional, and national members of the media, particularly within defined core target markets (i.e. USDA, Agricultural Research Service, and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to report impact of the university's agricultural research
- Explore publicity and relevant marketing opportunities to promote the college
- Pitch story ideas to the media, and serve as a liaison between members of the media and the Agricultural Research team
- Photograph events for publications and marketing materials
- Maintain database of photographs for reference and inclusion in a variety of publications
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum:
- 3 years of experience writing press releases, news stories, and/or working with the media
- Bachelor's degree in English, Mass Communications, Public Relations or related field from an accredited institution
- Ability to understand complex agricultural research topics and explain in laymen's terms
- Excellent written, oral, and organizational skills
- Knowledge of and familiarity with AP writing style
- Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships and work well with a variety of personalities
- Ability to travel on occasion to conferences, events, and workshops
Preferred:
- News/public information writing experience
- Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution
Working conditions
- Occasional overnight and weekend travel required
- Occasional night/weekend hours
- Occasional work outdoors with scientists conducting field research
- Majority of time spent in a climate controlled environment
Physical requirements
- Occasional standing
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis
