Research Assistant for Animal Product Development
Job Summary
The Research Assistant (RA) in product development will work with the Director, scientists and graduate students in developing meat and dairy products (soap, ice cream, cheese, etc.). The RA will provide support for research by helping in experiments, collecting data and performing operational duties associated with product development for research and outreach. This is a full-time position at the Agricultural Research Station in the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct research and development activities with scientists and graduate students
Make meat and dairy products for sale and for research
Maintain the equipment in the processing area of the creamery
Perform and keep weekly records of raw milk (bulk tank) somatic cell counts
Summarize data for statistical analysis as needed
Prepare results for scientific presentation
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum:
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences.
Experienced with making soap, cheese and ice cream
Experienced using soft serve and batch freezer ice cream makers
Interpersonal skills necessary to work collaboratively with individuals in and outside of the department
Self-directed and the ability to work independently, set priorities, and maintain/meet research timelines
Valid driver's license
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Agricultural sciences or Food and Nutrition with experience in making dairy products.
Working Conditions
Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:oo am to 5:00 pm
Some evenings or early mornings and weekend work
Occasional travel to attend meetings/trainings
Work is done in both a climate controlled environment and outside
Physical Requirements
Physical activities include sitting, standing, walking, heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds), reaching over the shoulder, and repeated bending.
