Research Assistant - Ag and Natural Resource
Job Summary
The ANR (Ag & Natural Resource) - Research Assistant will work with the McIntire Stennis program director to assist with data collection and carry out project initiatives. The assistant will provide record keeping of data and assistance with outreach workshops and demonstrations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide assistance in data collection from meters and record-keeping
- Perform spreadsheet analyses using Microsoft Office
- Assist with identifying forest infestation from site maps
- Maintain and monitor ambient weather conditions
- Maintain wood processing facilities
- Aide in the construction of new systems
- Guide tours and guests of facilities/site locations in a professional and friendly manner
- Additional duties as requested
Qualifications
Minimum:
- B.S. Degree in a related field
- Knowledge of natural resource evaluation
- Ability to solve problems
- Dependable
- Ability to lift thirty pounds
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others
- Positive attitude
- Experience with word processor and spreadsheet software
- Ability to handle conflict and difficult situations
Preferred:
- Master's degree
- GPA of 3.0 or better
- Two or more years of experience in an Agricultural-related field of study.
- Two or more years' experience with plant production
- Experience with monitoring equipment
- Experience with operating, maintaining and calibrating equipment
- Experience with data collection
- Experience with image analysis
- Experience with forestry production and processing
Working conditions
- Travel required field collection of forestry monitoring
- Weekend and some holiday hours will be required in addition to regular work hours
- Working outdoors in wet environments and extreme temperature conditions; exposure to inclement weather is possible; around animals (rodents, snakes, etc.) and insects (ants, spiders, beetles etc.)
- Capable of working in laboratory environments during wood processing.
Physical requirements
- Ability to lift and carry heavy materials up to 30 pounds
- Adequate vision, hearing and manual dexterity to operate equipment
