FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (FVSU), a state and land-grant institution of the University System of Georgia, invites applications for the position of Student Support Services Project Specialist.
Fort Valley State University, the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia, is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2,800 students including graduate students. JOB SUMMARY:
Student Support Services is a federally funded TRIO program that assists first generation, low-income and disabled students to succeed in completing a bachelor's degree. Reporting to the Executive Director of TRIO College Access Programs, the Project Specialist will provide personal, academic, and career counseling services with professionalism and knowledge of TRIO regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the Executive Director with overall implementation of the SSS Work Plan; Manage the SSS Counseling and advising component, plan and implement special focus project workshops, events, and seminars (study skills; counseling; financial counseling); monitor participant's academic progress and maintain student records and database.
- Provide comprehensive academic advising, individualized counseling, and career planning services to students on a drop-in and appointment basis, and online, as appropriate.
- Provide financial aid counseling, assist students with financial aid applications, guide students in maintaining financial aid eligibility, and help students with financial aid waiver appeals and securing other sources of college funding if financial aid eligibility is
- Use assessment tools to help students identify their areas of strengths and weaknesses for retention purposes and develop success plans with students that create strategies to guide them towards graduation.
- Utilize record keeping systems and maintain records for federal grant
- Lead efforts to ensure timely and comprehensive response to Early Warnings and other notifications of issues impacting student success issued by faculty.
- Address the unique needs in educational planning of students with no identified education goal or course of study, students enrolled in learning support courses as well as students who are either first generation, underrepresented, disabled, and/or nontraditional.
- Function as consultant to faculty regarding student performance, retention, and academic

- Participate in professional development in academic advisement and educational planning, higher education student success, and cultural competency; attend conferences and training sessions when needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree required in higher education, educational administration/leadership, counseling, psychology, social work, public administration, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience working in a federal TRIO program or similar program/project for disadvantaged or disabled college students.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience advising and assisting disadvantaged and/or disabled college students with academic advising, postsecondary course selection, financial aid and economic literacy information, and the graduate school application process.
- Bachelor's degree with at least three years of counseling experience and/or at least three years of experience working in a post-secondary environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of financial aid regulations and
- Commitment and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues, individually and in teams.
- Demonstrated ability to use mature judgement, compassion, ethics, morals, and character to inform decisions.
- Excellent interpersonal
- Effective oral and written communication skills and some familiarity with Microsoft Office
