Postdoctoral Position in Entomology
Job Summary
This is a non-tenure-track position with research responsibilities focused on the management of whiteflies on vegetables and fruits, with a holistic approach that integrates tenets of pest management including application of entomopathogens. The position is budgeted at 100% research and is for a limited period (9 - 12 months). The position could be extended for an additional year if funds become available.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The appointee will coordinate, conduct and publish original research to support growers with management of whiteflies using a holistic approach that involves cultural, natural enemies such as parasitoids, predators, entomopathogenic nematodes and fungi.
- Project will include field studies that involves monitoring of whiteflies populations on fruit and vegetable crops, monitoring of predator and parasitoid populations, in addition to various aspects of invertebrate pathology and microbial control such as production and formulation technology, genetics, and ecology.
- Focus crops will include specialty fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, snap beans and squash.
- Areas of emphasis will include research on microbial pesticides, such as nematodes, fungi, and their combinations; and their interactions with other biological control agents such as parasitoids.
- Research is expected to include laboratory, greenhouse, plot and on-farm monitoring of insects and field trials.
Qualifications
- Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Entomology or closely related field with a strong background of relevant course work
- A record of peer reviewed scholarly achievement, and excellent communication skills.
- Specialized knowledge in working with entomopathogenic nematodes and fungi
- A good experience in row crop entomology
Working Conditions
- Travel required - There will be travels to farms in GA for pest monitoring and field trials.
- Part of the project will be outdoors on farms.
Physical Requirements
The physical requirements of this position include standing and sitting for extended periods of time, lifting heavy objects and performing repetitive tasks.
Direct Reports
This position will supervise a research assistant, graduate and undergraduate students.
