Job Summary

A Plumber/Pipe Fitter Mechanic is responsible for performing a range of plumbing and piping installation jobs for industrial, commercial, and residential customers. Customer-based activities require an individual possessing traits of decisiveness, initiative, tact, judgment, integrity, dependability, and the ability to communicate in a technically credible manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Ability to meet or exceed the University's attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Ability to evaluate objectively, assembly, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes. Lay out, fabricate, assembly, install, and maintain piping and piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial processing systems.
  • Study building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and plan sequence of installations to avoid obstructions and activities of other construction workers.
  • Inspect structure and work site as a whole to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe and to ascertain that holes needed to be cut will not cause structural weakness.
  • Locate and mark position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob.
  • Cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Select type and size of pipe and related materials according to job specifications.
  • Cut pipe, using hacksaw, pipe cutters, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, or pipe cutting machine.
  • Thread pipe, using threading machine or by hand.
  • Bend pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine or by bending it by hand.
  • Assembly and install valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay and plastic, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Test piping systems for leaks by use of appropriate method.
  • Install and repair plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, and water softeners.
  • Secure pipes to structure with clamps, brackets, and hangers, using hand tools.
  • May install refrigeration and air-conditioning piping systems including valves, sight glasses and associated equipment.
  • May weld holding fixtures or bracing to structural steel members.
  • Perform routine plumbing/piping installation activities without direct oversight or on-site assistance.
  • Conform to the FVSU/FM Policies or Procedures.
  • Perform normal clerical functions as required (Example: Daily Reports, Receiving Tickets, etc.).
  • Conduct non-installation work in support of the Fabrication Shop and Service Departments, as assigned daily and consistently.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work as part of a team or with minimal supervision.
  • Preform any other work assigned by his supervisor.

Minimum Position Requirements:

  • State of Georgia Junior or Master Plumber required

Working conditions

  • Working outdoors and in enclosed areas is required.
  • Working in extreme heat or cold conditions on occasion.
  • Some evening, night and weekend work as needed.

Physical requirements

  • Ability to push 50 pounds and lift 20 pounds. (Material handling)
  • Ability to climb ladder and step ladder.
  • Bending at waist, sitting, kneeling, laying horizontally, climbing, walking, etc., as job may       require.
  • Ability to work in extreme heat, cold and noisy areas.
