Part-time Nursing Student Success Coach

Job Summary:

Fort Valley State University is seeking dedicated applicants for a part-time Academic Success Coach for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Nursing students are faced with many challenges as they navigate through academic programs. Students must adapt to changes related to grading, testing, balancing courses, clinical, and personal life. In addition, some students may have encountered academic challenges prior to enrolling in a nursing program and need additional support to ensure success. The high stakes associated with program completion and NCLEX success can impact the student's holistic well-being. In addition, student retention and degree completion are measures that are important to accrediting bodies and alleviating the looming shortage of nurses nationwide. A nursing success coach would attend to the students' holistic needs by providing:

  • weekly interaction
  • ongoing support with coursework
  • study tips and resources.
  • time management and stress reduction strategies.
  • health promotion interventions.
  • test- taking and writing strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with program director and course coordinator to identify at risk students and develop strategies to improve retention and reinforce course content.
  • Meet with students to identify gaps in knowledge or skills and develop an action plan for success.
  • Conduct regular check-ins to assess students' progress and identify potential academic challenges.
  • Mentor and tutor students individually or in small groups.
  • Assist students with critical thinking, test-taking, and writing skills.
  • Conduct re-entry and skills lab remediation.
  • Document student attendance and progress with review material.
  • Educate students on self-care and stress reduction.
  • Conduct recruitment events with areas schools to identify students interested in pursuing a career in nursing.
  • Plan and Implement summer program for high school students interested in nursing to increase program pipeline.
  • Assist students with setting academic and career goals aligned with their personal and professional aspirations.
  • Connect students with counseling services and other campus resources as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Nursing.
  • 5-years of nursing experience.
  • A minimum of two years in nursing academia.
  • Experience with mentoring/coaching students.
  • Consistently meets deadlines and efficiently manages multiple tasks, demonstrating resilience in high-pressure environments.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work independently.
  • Familiarity with NextGen NCLEX, ATI, undergraduate nursing curriculums
  • Ability to work cohesively with members of the nursing team.
  • Knowledge of academia, student policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates nondiscriminatory attitude towards student and peers.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding student interactions and documentation.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Flexibility for after-hours coverage including evenings and weekends.
