FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (FVSU), a state and land-grant institution of the University System of Georgia, invites applications for the position of Licensed Professional Counselor in the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
Fort Valley State University, the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia, is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2,800 students including graduate students. The university is located in the town of Fort Valley in Peach County, the original site of the state's peach industry. Its 1,365-acre (5.52 km2) campus is Georgia's second-largest public university in area.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Director of Student Counseling. The counselor will provide direct clinical and crisis prevention services to students, emphasizing the psychological, emotional, academic, and social development of the college population. This holistic approach is integrated into services in order to promote student success and retention. Proactive and preventative workshops and outreach presentations are also a basic function of this position.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The successful candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills, which are characteristics inherent to the counseling profession.
- The counselor must be able to listen and understand a variety of viewpoints and cultural backgrounds in order to help solve problems and improve the lives of students
- It is critical that the counselor should possess therapeutic skills effective with a college population.
- The counselor must be highly organized, and yet flexible.
- With a variety of duties, a large number of walk-in's and scheduled appointments, the counselor should possess the ability to make appropriate priority judgments.
- The counselor should demonstrate the ability to appropriately respond to crisis situations.
- The counselor should possess the ability to network and develop working relationships with students, faculty, staff and colleagues from other USG institutions and prospective employers.
- A thorough knowledge and understanding of laws pertinent to mental health and disability is critical.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Master's Degree in counseling, psychology or a related field from an accredited university is required.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in the field of mental health, preferably in higher education, is a requirement.
- Certifications include the following:
- Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), at minimum.
- Certified and/or eligible as a Certified Professional Counseling Supervisor (CPCS).
- The successful candidate must possess advanced knowledge in the areas of crisis response, disability services, laws, crisis intervention and post-vention.
- Membership in The American Counseling Association (ACA), American Psychological Association (APA) and Licensed Professional Counseling Association (LPCA) is required.
- Computer proficiency is necessary, and a working knowledge of Electronic Medical Records.
