FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (FVSU), a state and land-grant institution of the University System of Georgia, invites applications for a Grounds Keeper position in the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology
Fort Valley State University, the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia, is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2,800 students including graduate students. The university is in the town of Fort Valley in Peach County, the original site of the state's peach industry. Its 1,365-acre (5.52 km2) campus is Georgia's second-largest public university in area.
JOB SUMMARY:
Will perform landscape maintenance and installation tasks. Repairs basic grounds equipment. Fertilizes and chemically treats turf, shrubs, and trees. Mows, weeds, waters, and removes trash. This position will assist with other building trade tasks as needed.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Mow, prune, rake, water, trim and edge landscaping.
- Walk assigned areas of campus, collecting, and removing trash.
- Apply fertilizer and insecticides to plant materials. Pressure washes campus area. Cleans outdoor furniture. Repairs basic equipment.
- Installs new trees, flowers, and shrubbery.
- Assists in inclement weather duties.
- Performs other related assigned duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid driver's license.
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in a university setting.
- Ability to operate hand tools and equipment used in grounds keeping such as lawnmower, weed-eater, shears, trimmers, etc.
- Ability to follow detailed oral/written instructions.
- Have knowledge operating all landscaping equipment.
- Must be able to maintain the landscaping equipment. Category 24 Pesticide license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to operate hand tools and equipment used in grounds keeping such as lawnmower, weed-eater, shears, trimmers, etc.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to carry at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb ladder and step ladder.
