FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (FVSU), a state and land-grant institution of the University System of Georgia, invites applications for the position of EFNEP Nutrition Educator- Hancock County.

Fort Valley State University, the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia, is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2,800 students including graduate students. The university is located in the town of Fort Valley in Peach County, the original site of the state's peach industry. Its 1,365-acre (5.52 km2) campus is Georgia's second-largest public university in area.

JOB SUMMARY:

Fort Valley State University Cooperative Extension Program (FVSU-CEP) is an educational resource dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Georgians through researched based programs. Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is a nutrition education program within FVSU-CEP. EFNEP focuses on helping families in acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes and changed behavior necessary for nutritionally sound diets and healthier lifestyles. Youth classes are also included into the program. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) nutrition educator will be required to recruit homemakers and youth for nutrition classes and to market EFNEP in specified communities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit homemakers in a specified community to teach nutrition lessons.
  • This staff member will travel to EFNEP counties to deliver EFNEP programs to homemakers with youth under the age of 18 living in the household.
  • Conduct nutrition education learning experiences with identified audience by utilizing identified nutrition education curricula and food demonstrations. The curriculum will focus on the following topics: nutrition, food preparation, food safety, meal management, use of food dollars and physical activity.
  • Conduct special programs and events in targeted communities and schools as deemed.
  • Assess participants' nutritional needs using program tools and make referrals to appropriate resources.
  • Identify and implement the nutrition education plan to achieve program goals.
  • Office duties include data entry, collecting and organizing evaluation data, accurate recordkeeping, and monthly reports.
  • Participate in all in-service trainings, meetings, etc.
  • Some overnight travel required.

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED, teaching skills, communication, and organization skills.
  • Two years of work experience in food and nutrition or related area.
  • Valid driver's license and use of insured automobile during workday (mileage will be reimbursed according to USG policy).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Successful applicant must be familiar with specified community to build respectful and effective relationships with homemakers, community stakeholders and business owners.
  • Successful applicant must have, knowledge and successful experience in speaking with and teaching small and large groups.
  • Successful applicant must have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Successful applicant must be creative and innovative in providing educational programming for the determined community.
  • Successful applicant must be able to work effectively with diverse clientele, community, staff, and students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Servsafe certified

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • Typically, climate-controlled office environment.
  • Travel required - Travel within service area, conferences/trainings, and campus activities.
  • Evening/night/weekend work - Some overnight travel for trainings/conferences.
  • Working outdoors - Occasional, farmers markets, health fairs and community events.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Requires site visits to other agencies and schools.
  • Ability to transport up to 25 pounds of food, cooking equipment and resources needed to facilitate lessons within the assigned community.
  • Ability to repeat tasks of cooking, stirring, lifting pots/pans and teach lessons simultaneously.
