Director of Risk Management, Safety, and Transportation

The Director of Risk Management, Safety and Transportation provides executive direction to the formulation and administration of Risk Management, Safety and Transportation policies and programs in meeting the University's risk management, public health, safety, environmental protection, transportation and compliance responsibilities. This position plans and directs the development of risk management and loss prevention programs in order to provide maximum protection of the University's assets at the most economical rates. This position is also responsible for managing the University's vehicle fleet in accordance with DOAS and Board of Regents guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop departmental short and long term goals and objectives and oversee workforce management within the Risk Management, Safety and Transportation.
  • Monitor Risk Management, Safety and Transportation programs with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Develop programs and obtain resources required to execute all aspects of the University's environmental responsibilities including those covering occupational health, industrial hygiene, chemical, laboratory, biological, radiation safety, animal care and usage.
  • Develop benchmarking criteria and collect performance data to monitor success and risk conditions associated with safety {environmental occupational) programs.
  • Develop and implement programs dealing with the investigation and prevention of transportation and safety related accidents; risk management and loss control; workforce safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Serve on and/or contribute guidance and support to various University executives, committees and councils related to governance and compliance regarding risk management, safety and transportation.
  • Formulate, and with approval, administer Risk Management, Safety and Transportation operating budget.
  • Advise Plant Operations on the design, construction and maintenance of structures and infrastructure system as they relate to environmental, health and safety compliance.
  • Provide decision support to the Vice President of Business and Finance and/or the Office of the President on legal and policy issues and matters related to compliance and institutional risk management.
  • Serves as the University liaison with the State of Georgia (DOAS) Risk Management unit to procure or provide various insurance lines as required by Fort Valley State University; report claims to DOAS.
  • Directly supervises Transportation Bus Drivers and works with Students on development of the Transportation Schedule.
  • Ensures the campus acquires and maintains an inventory of vehicles available for employee travel, and responsible for all policies and procedure development related to a vehicle motor pool in compliance with the DOAS.
  • Directs and oversees the use of the University's vehicles and equipment, and directs improvement implementations.

Qualifications 

Minimum: 

  • Valid driver's license
  • Bachelor's Degree in Related Field
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written, and professional work ethic
  • Minimum of three years' experience working independently in safety and risk management
  • Experience in the development of relevant policies and procedures
  • Minimum of two years training experience in safety and risk management
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups (students, staff, and administration)
  • Above average interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work weekends and flexible hours

Preferred: 

  • Master's degree in related field
  • Four or more years' experience working independently in safety and risk management
  • Three or more years training experience in safety and risk management
  • Experience working in a college/university setting

Working conditions

  • May be required to work evenings and/or weekends
  • Work will be performed indoors and/or outdoors; exposure to inclement weather conditions is possible
  • Occasional travel to attend conferences, meetings, trainings, etc.

Physical requirements

  • Reaching, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions
  • Lifting, moving up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects
  • May be subjected to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, extreme temperatures, work space restrictions, and intense noises
