FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (FVSU), a state and land-grant institution of the University System of Georgia, is seeking candidates for the Director of Accounting Services position in the Office of Business and Finance - Accounting Services.
Fort Valley State University, the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia, is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2,800 students including graduate students. The university is located in the town of Fort Valley in Peach County, the original site of the state's peach industry. Its 1,365-acre (5.52 km2) campus is Georgia's second-largest public university in area.
JOB SUMMARY:
This position reports to the AVP/Controller and is responsible for directing the university's accounting services functions. The Director of Accounting Services supervises staff, manages Grants and Contracts, Accounts Payable, Vending, General Ledger, and Asset Management financial functions. The Director of Accounting Services is responsible for maintaining a system of internal controls that will ensure that University assets are adequately safeguarded and that all financial reports are prepared in compliance with all financial policies.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervision of Accounting Services functions which includes general ledger accounting, accounts payable, grants accounting, assets management and treasury management, assisting with financial reporting, audit preparation and internal control review.
- Prepares and analyzes financial reports for submission to external agencies, the Board of Regents, federal and state agencies, and campus departments.
- Coordinates and conducts monthly and quarterly reviews of financial reports to awarding agencies; reviews manual invoices to agencies for reimbursements.
- Coordinates with other university staff to resolve issues.
- Prepares journal generation for all sub-modules when needed.
- Reconciles asset management sub-module and accounts for asset additions and disposals
- Reviews account ownership; trial balances reconciliations for each sub-module.
- Performs the duties of the Controller in his or her absence.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines.
- Knowledge of university purchasing policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of grant management principles.
- Knowledge of budget management principles.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
- Skill in organization and project management.
- Skill in the supervision of personnel.
- Skill in decision making and problem solving.
- Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or relevant field from an accredited college or university with five years or more experience in accounting.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles including accounting reporting and budgeting.
- Knowledge of automated accounting and reporting system and proficiency with spreadsheet, word processing software, query/report writing and data maintenance.
- Excellent interpersonal, customer service, organizational, oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently with little supervision
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to pass a background check, including consumer credit check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in a course of study related to the occupational field required.
- Five years of experience in a Higher Education setting.
- Knowledge of Georgia Department of Audits, Board of Regents Policies and Procedures and OMB Circulars: A110, A21, A133.
