Dean of Students/Executive Director of Residential Life

The Dean of Students/Executive Director of Residential Life reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and serves as a key member of the Vice President's leadership team. The position provides strategic and operational oversight for the direction, development, and implementation of programming and services that support student well-being and development such as Housing and Residential Life, Student Conduct, Campus Life, Health and Wellness and Outreach. The role is accountable for multiple campus and community-based resources and development across the University, as well many grant and partner-based programs and projects. The position partners closely with other student and academic affairs leaders to ensure robust and aligned networks of support that positively impact students.


The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following:

  1. A focus on holistic student well-being and development (academic, social, physical, and emotional)
  2. Experience building and leading a comprehensive structure to support Housing and Residential Life, Student Conduct, Campus Life, Health and Wellness and Outreach
  3. An intentional focus - including programming and assessment experience - on student belonging and engagement on a residential campus.
  4. A deep, authentic, and personal concern for and engagement with students.
  5. Ensure optimal utilization of financial resources, effective operations, and technological platforms.

Housing and Residential Life

  • Must possess the capacity to leverage data and assessments to inform long-range strategic planning and budget forecasting for residence life & housing.
  • Serves as a critical member of the Student Life and Leadership Team, who serves as a visible, present, and approachable leader of the Residential Living Office, providing oversight for day-to-day operations of residence life, including serving as functional lead for all areas of housing.
  • Possess leadership for residential master planning, which includes new construction and ongoing strategies to modernize existing facilities.
  • Ensure the implementation of crisis management protocols and procedures and lead department responses to high-level crises such as student death, significant health and safety issues, or contagious illness concerns.

Campus Life

  • Serves as the primary advocate for the student experience, which entails campaigning for students on issues related to co-curricular education, leadership opportunities, safety, room assignments, etc. (Ability to build and sustain trust with all students.)
  • Provides leadership and support for programs and events including major campus events, late night programming, weekly programs and oversees a comprehensive student organization development program based in student development theory and relevant leadership models.
  • Assist with Summer Camp/ Conference and event registration logistics and operations in concert with appropriate campus partners.
  • Provides professional development for university stakeholders on managing student behavioral issues, student rights and responsibilities.

Student Conduct

  • Experience with judicial procedures and policies FERPA, and Title IX, as well knowledge of best practices in risk management
  • Able to assess and support the developmental needs of all college students across a broad spectrum of diverse lived experiences and backgrounds.
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills and the ability to handle conflict resolution issues is important; strong analytical and human relations skills needed to negotiate solutions to complex student issues and concerns.
  • Provide yearly review of conduct proceedings and disseminates the annual Student Handbook.
  • Knowledge of college/university best practices in risk management

Mental Health and Wellness/Outreach

  • Mental health and wellness experience, including crisis response and conflict resolution experience.
  • Engages and collaborates with community partners.
  • Effective grants management.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a field related to the position required; Doctorate strongly preferred
  • Minimum of five to seven years of recent and relevant experience
  • A comprehensive and strong experience with housing and residence life, campus life, well-being, and development, programming that enable realization of the vision.
  • Mental health and wellness experience (contract management)
  • Deep collaboration skills, including the desire and ability to work with and coach a committed team of colleagues.
  • Demonstrated success in effectively partnering with campus stakeholders.
  • Must have a keen understanding of Star Rez, Banner, Peoplesoft, Maxient and other student management systems and card access systems.
