Coordinator of Student-Athlete Success/SWA

JOB SUMMARY:

The Coordinator of Student-Athlete Success/SWA assists the Director of Athletics with all aspects of the NCAA Division II athletic program as it relates to student-athlete academic success and compliance. The incumbent is also responsible for the continued growth of the department and student-athlete development.

As the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA), the incumbent also serves as a senior leader with the department and serves in an additional oversight capacity in the absence of the Director of Athletics.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinator of Student-Athlete Success

  • Completes student-athlete eligibility and satisfactory progress towards degree along with completion of Academic Success Rate and Graduation Success Rate.
  • Collaborates with university personnel and faculty to provide academic support services including tutors, transcript evaluations, and degree checks.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive NCAA compliance program including, but not limited to rules education, student-athlete certification, and NCAA rules monitoring.
  • Collaborates with university personnel to ensure overall NCAA compliance related to eligibility, financial aid, admission, recruitment, housing, and academics.
  • Provides rules interpretations and promotes an atmosphere of compliance.
  • Complies with all the NCAA, SIAC, and Fort Valley State University rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Implements a summer bridge program to evaluate, update, and develop summer transition programming to welcome and educate incoming student-athletes.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive student-athlete welfare program including, but not limited to mental health services, strength & conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition, career education, and NIL.
  • Serves as liaison to the Student Conduct Office and assists in managing student welfare and discipline issues.
  • Serves as advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

As an SWA

  • Monitors and implements gender equity that meets the needs of Title IX and reflects the values of the university.
  • Supervises select athletic programs.
  • Assists the Director of Athletics with fundraising by planning, coordinating, and supervising events and promotion of activities related to revenue generation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and application of NCAA rules.
  • Knowledge and application of the rules and regulations governing intercollegiate athletics.
  • Knowledge and application of gender equity in reference to Title IX.
  • Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with on-campus and off-campus community.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

The Director of Athletics assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

GUIDELINES:

Guidelines include NCAA rules, University System of Georgia policies, Title IX regulations, and university policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application. This position develops department guidelines.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of varied management and supervisory duties. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to assist in directing the university's athletic programs. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those programs.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other university employees, representatives of athletic associations, athletic directors at other universities, community members, NCAA representatives, students, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services; to give or exchange information; to resolve problems; to motivate or influence persons; or to justify, defend or negotiate matters.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an office, in sports facilities, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Evening and weekend hours as well as travel are required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience working in a Division I or II intercollegiate athletics program as an administrator or coach.
  • Experience with NCAA compliance rules or academic support for student-athletes or student-athlete welfare programs or gender equity required.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), organizational, and human relations skills required.
