Athletic Academic Assistant

JOB SUMMARY:

The Academic Assistant is responsible for providing support services for student-athletes to help them progress toward graduation. The incumbent assists the Coordinator of Student-Athlete Success/SWA with managing the daily activities of student-athletes academic matriculation from admission to graduation.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors the academic progress of student-athletes.
  • Acts as liaison with faculty, administrators, and coaches regarding student-athlete academic matters.
  • Counsels student-athletes regarding general academic matters as it relates to NCAA academic eligibility, degree status, and university academic requirements.
  • Provides assistance with scheduling tutors through university programs and individualized tutoring.
  • Maintains progress toward degree checklists for student-athletes.
  • Provides assistance for at-risk student-athletes
  • Acts as liaison with disability services and other offices and programs related to student-athlete academic performance.
  • Assists in preparation of academic documentation for NCAA student-athlete certification.
  • Assists in the recruitment process of potential student-athletes.
  • Assists with workshops and community service projects with SAAC.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Student-Athlete Success/SWA.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have the ability to work with a wide variety of constituencies.
  • Knowledge of NCAA policies, rules and guidelines.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with on-campus and off-campus community.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

The Coordinator of Student-Athlete Success/SWA assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

GUIDELINES:

Guidelines include NCAA rules, University System of Georgia policies, Title IX regulations, and university policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of following instructions provided by supervisor.
  • The purpose of this position is to assist in helping the university's athletic programs. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those programs.

CONTACTS:

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other university employees, representatives of athletic associations, athletic directors at other universities, community members, NCAA representatives, students, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services; to give or exchange information; to resolve problems; to motivate or influence persons; or to justify, defend or negotiate matters

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an office, in sports facilities, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Evening and weekend hours as well as travel are required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working in a Division I or II intercollegiate athletics program as an administrator or coach.
  • Experience with NCAA compliance rules or academic support for student-athletes or student-athlete welfare programs or gender equity required.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), organizational, and human relations skills required.
