Associate Director - McNair Scholars Program
Job Summary
The Associate Director works to prepare student from low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented backgrounds for successful entrance into and completion of Ph.D. programs by formulating and implementing programs, seminars, and workshops by collaborating with on-campus partners to implement services that will facilitate Scholars' development. Under the direction of the McNair Scholars Director, the Associate Director assists in the promotion of the McNair Scholars Program, recruitment, and selection of participants. The Associate Director is responsible for providing on-going mentorship and guidance to McNair Scholars to ensure their academic success, as well as personal and professional development, and maintains strong paper and digital records. In collaboration with faculty mentors, the Associate Director also guides McNair Scholars through the completion of individual original research projects; assists McNair Scholars in applying for summer research opportunity programs, internships, fellowships, scholarships, graduate programs, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities
List the primary job duties and responsibilities
- In collaboration with the Director, conducts assessments for each Scholar to determine their needs and administer appropriate services; supervises project programming and research experiences.
- Advise and assist students with graduate school admissions and the financial aid process.
- Provide academic advising (including the monitoring of GPAs) and college, career, financial aid and financial literacy activities for disadvantaged and underrepresented students.
- Use excellent communication skills (including good grammar and spelling skills) with the ability to develop orientation and public relations and to conduct recruitment presentations.
- Review, analyze, and evaluate applications of eligible students.
- Assists the Director with the completion of the required Annual Performance Report.
- Maintain a project applicant wait list in an effective and efficient manner.
- Maintain a caseload of participants and provide them with services, activities, and support as documented in their Academic Development Plans (ADP).
Qualifications
Minimum: List the minimum qualifications required to successfully perform the job and are necessary to be considered for the position.
- Doctoral degree preferred; minimum of a M.Sc. Degree or equivalent in one of the STEM fields and six (6) years' experience in teaching and research experience or a Master's Degree, in higher education, student affairs, guidance and counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience collegiate teaching and/or administrative experience, including working with disadvantaged and underrepresented students.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience with federal TRiO programs, academic support programs, or similar projects or programs for diverse student populations.
- Experience coordinating and supervising project programming and research experiences.
- Experience advising and assisting students with graduate school admissions and financial aid process.
- Professional or personal experiences in overcoming obstacles experienced by disadvantaged and underrepresented students.
- Familiarity with the barriers to postsecondary and postbaccalaureate education experienced by low-income and first generation students.
Preferred: State the qualifications that would be beneficial to have, but are not essential to the job.
- Doctorate degree.
- Minimum of 10 years' experience with students from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds.
Working conditions
The working conditions should be identified in this section - regular evening and weekend work, shift work, working outdoors, and so forth.
- Travel is required to professional conferences, student research conferences, university graduate schools, STEM-related businesses, etc.
- Some evening/night/weekend work may be required to work on administrative tasks to present workshops/seminars and to keep up with the pace of the program.
- Chaperone students outside on college campuses during graduate school tours.
- Climate controlled environment adequate heating and cooling is required to accomplish program tasks.
Physical requirements
- Standing or sitting for extended periods of time,
- Ability to lift 10 pounds or more.
Direct reports
- The Project Associate Director will co-supervise Graduate Assistants /Resident Advisors with the Coordinator.
